I like to pick up unique items that strike me as being particularly well made. Sometimes these items end up being relatively common, but other times I can scarcely find any record of them at all. Below you'll find some items that I've found to be particularly illusive in the hopes that someone who has information about them--or perhaps more of them to sell--will stumble upon this page while searching for these rare objects.
Vintage Nikon Wayfarer Sunglasses, circa 1984
Model numbers I've identified: NK4756-2 and NK4770-1
I've found just a few pair of these sunglasses after months of searching. The first belonged to my father. The second were sold on Etsy in early 2010. The third pair was sold on Ebay in mid 2010. I was fortunate to find a pristine pair of NK4756-2 (pictured here and here), and have been looking for more. They're fantastic sunglasses.
Best I can tell, Nikon only manufactured this model for a sort period of time in the early 1980s. I haven't found any indication that they were actually sold at retail; it seems they were given away as promotional incentives with high-end camera equipment.
If you have any information about these glasses, or you have a pair yourself, I'd love to hear from you.
I'm also always on the lookout for a couple pieces of vintage audio equipment: Eico HF-81 in original condition (plus any original stock tubes), and the Systemdek IIX (also sometimes known as the Systemdek 11X). If you're looking to sell any of these items I'd be happy to make you an offer.
